VERSES Instruction Manual Introduction VERSES is a utility that works with Windows Marquee screen saver to put different Bible verses (from the Psalms) on the screen when the screen saver engages. How it works The Marquee screen saver stores the text for the screen saver in a Windows file called CONTROL.INI. Every time VERSES is run, it selects a verse at random from a list of stored verses and writes the verse into the appropriate place in this file. NOTE: VERSES does not display a different verse every time screen saver engages. It changes verses only when the program is run--a quick (less than 3 seconds) process that can occur automatically when the computer is turned on or manually any time you wish. How to use VERSES Step 1: Activate the Marquee screen saver - Click on Windows in the Windows menu bar. - Double click on Main. - Double click on Control Panel. - Double click on Desktop. - Select the Marquee option under screen saver. - Configure the screen saver for font type and size, speed, and background color. (I recommend a relatively small type size (about 12) so that all or most of the verse appears on the screen at once, and a black background to provide maximum screen protection.) - Exit Desktop, Control Panel, and Main. Step 2: Put VERSES on your hard drive There are two versions of VERSES included in this package: VERSES.EXE is a DOS program that runs quickly (about 3 seconds) without displaying anything except a brief blank screen. WINVERSE.EXE is a Windows program that in addition to putting the verse into the Marquee screen saver file also displays the verse with a colorful graphic. You can use either or both versions. Except when referring specifically to the installation of the DOS version, the term VERSES in this manual refers to both programs. It is best to establish a separate directory for VERSES or copy them into an existing directory (don't put them in the root directory). I recommend you make a directory called VERSES and copy the two programs into that directory. To run either version of VERSES, you must know where on your hard disk they are. Step 3: Run VERSES. There are at least two ways to run VERSES. Option One (Manual): To give yourself access to VERSES at any time so you can change the verse at will, install either version in your Windows Applications or other Window that you have easy access to. To install the DOS version: - From the Windows Menu, choose File...New. - Select Program Item. - Type the description you want to see on the Window. I recommend "Verses" or Psalms". - Type the complete path where VERSES is located. For example, C:\VERSES\VERSES - Select an icon. (I use the up arrow to remind me of the source of the verses.) To install the Windows version: - From the Windows Menu, choose File...New. - Select Program Item. - Type the description you want to see on the Window. I recommend "Verses" or Psalms". - Type the complete path where WINVERSE is located. For example, C:\VERSES\WINVERSE NOTE: You must have the file VBRUN300.DLL present in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to run WINVERSE (or any other software developed with Microsoft's Visual Basic). If you do not have it, you can download it from CompuServe or most other services which make shareware available. Thereafter, whenever you want to change the displayed verse, double click on the Verses icon. (The program runs on my 486-33 in about 3 seconds.) Option 2 (Automatic) (can be done along with Option 1--the options are not mutually exclusive): To run verses automatically when you turn on your computer, update your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to run the DOS version of VERSES. For example, if you have put VERSES into a directory called C:\VERSES, type the following line near the end of the AUTOEXEC.BAT: C:\VERSES\VERSES (If you don't know understand the concept of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and how to change it, please let someone help you. Do not attempt this action on your own.) Notes This program writes to the CONTROL.INI file--a simple text file in which Windows stores various kinds of information. Although there is at worst a remote possibility that the file could be damaged during this process (for example there is a power outage in the middle of the resave process), I recommend you save a copy of your original CONTROL.INI file under a different name or in a different place. Go into the Windows directory and type copy control.ini control2.ini This action will save a copy of your control.ini file to a new file called control2.ini. Then if you need to restore your original control.ini file you can type copy control2.ini control.ini Creative Solutions shall not be responsible for any damage that occurs to your computer as a result or apparent result of using VERSES. You are free to distribute this evaluation product to others provide you include the auxiliary files, MANUAL.TXT or MANUAL.WRI and README.1ST.
